Building Strength in Yourself

Physical fitness is praised a lot as a way to keep diseases at bay and to live longer. Building Strength in Yourself is one of the greatest things you can do, However people often promote physical fitness while neglecting mental fitness. Having resolve and a strong and healthy mind to handle the opportunities, challenges and stressors that the ups and downs of life put in front of you is crucial. Because, it is certain that change is ever-present in our lives and whether good or bad, change requires our response. How we respond to different circumstances and especially to adversity depends on our inner strength. Fortunately, you can attain inner strength just like cultivating other habits.

Being more mentally fit means you have inner strength and are able to use your mental abilities to the fullest, become more creative, make the most out of opportunities that come your way and handle stressful situations with less anxiety.  Having inner strength helps you have better emotional well-being and break free of self-judgement. To build strength in yourself you must embrace positive thinking, attention control, anxiety control, goal setting and visualization among other habits and thought processes that will get you stronger.  In life, you will need support from your inner strength hence you need to make sure you are strong enough. Here is how:

Identify Your Why

When you want to build on your inner strength, you need to know why you are doing it. Is it to survive a personal crisis or a crisis at work? To create self-confidence? Avoid complacency? Having a purpose will help your journey towards building strength in yourself smoother and more focused.

  • Believe in Yourself

Your inner core is a great first line support system and this requires you to put yourself first. Make your overall well-being your top priority and this will help you identify the kind of life roadmap you can control.

Focus on One Thing at a Time

When working on something or even just resting, resist the need to do different things at the same time. Deep focus grows your mental toughness and allows you to be present. If you decide to go for walk don’t take your phone along to call a friend along the way. It may feel good but it keeps you from actually enjoying the walk and taking in your surroundings while at it. When you are watching a show, resist the urge to scroll through social media at the same time. Listen to what is being said when in a meeting or spending time with family or friends. Practicing focus on one task will help in building strength in yourself because it helps you be present in all aspects of your life.

Set Short and Long Term Goals

Goal setting is a great way to build your inner strength because it gives you a purpose and working towards your goals step by step helps you earn inner strength. While it is human to want instant gratification and want things to go our way now, it is important to know that every step you make towards achieving your goals is a sign of progress. Progress breeds a sense of achievement and confidence and it is one of the surest ways to building strength in yourself.

  • Use Affirmations

Affirmations are an amazing way to cultivate self-belief. Chanting your affirmations to yourself in the morning or before going to bed will remind you that you are valuable and you are here and that you will kick ass at whatever you want to do. Using affirmations that include phrases on inner strength can also help you cultivate a stronger sense of self.

  • Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Taking a few minutes each day to check in with yourself and check how you are feeling physically, mentally and emotionally will help you in building strength in yourself. Meditation is a great way to let your mind relax and observe your thought process. Mindfulness meditation is great at improving attention control, alleviating strength, improving your working memory and cognition, and energizing your mind.

Set Limits and Stick to Them

Part of having inner strength is knowing what your limits are and being strong in the face of influence and coercion. Many times, the success-driven society can cause us to work till we drop trying to have it all. It is also a huge factor in why it is easy to find yourself saying yes even to stuff you don’t want to do. When building strength in yourself you need to realize that it’s okay to say no sometimes. Having boundaries both in your personal and professional life will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle while also preventing you from overextending yourself.

Carve Out Self-Care Time

What do you enjoy doing? When was the last time you did something that you enjoyed or just did something nice for yourself? If you trust your busy schedule you might find that you never get time to do what you enjoy. Taking the intentional step to carve out time to exercise, read, binge-watch, go on a date or cook something delicious will help you in building strength in yourself because you are nourishing your body, mind and spirit and putting yourself first.

  • Take Decisive Actions

When facing stressors or problems in your personal or professional life, it is very tempting to ignore and shy away from these problems in the hope that they would just go away. However, life is not like this and ignoring issues will not make them disappear. The key is to take decisive action whenever possible as this will help avoid anxiety and worry while also building strength in yourself.

Building strength in yourself does not take up a lot of time and like any habit, spending a little time on it each day will help you feel better about yourself and gain clarity.  When you need it, don’t be afraid to seek help.

If you feel you’re struggling with certain issues in your life Jennifer is here to help.
