Chicago’s top 10 most haunted

Chicago has earned a reputation for being one of the most haunted cities in America. There are numerous places where paranormal activity has been reported. While there are ten places that will literary shake you to the core, below are ten places that the most haunted.

Congress hotel

  1. Congress Plaza Hotel

The Congress Plaza Hotel has cut a name for being one of the largest hotels in Chicago and most haunted of them all. It is thought to have inspired the ‘1408’ short stories, Stephen King.

There are numerous ghosts in the hotel.” The security personnel is said to hear the music of the organ at night or the sound of skating wheels sliding across the floor in the Florentine Room. Some wedding attendees even fail to appear on the photographs taken around the Grand piano in the Gold Room. Because of these and more, it takes the first position of the Chicago top 10 most haunted.

RedLion pub

  1. Red Lion Pub

Red Lion Pub took the title of the Most Haunted Pub in Chicago a while back. It is somewhere that you go to have a drink and meet with a figure from the other world. Some of the sightings in this place include a mentally disabled girl going by the name Sharon, a cowboy, and a bearded man. There are also lots of other paranormal activities in the pub such as queer noises

Excalibur Club

  1. Excalibur Club

This club is made of rough granite rocks that give it a castle-like appearance. From its construction in 1892, it has hosted several establishments from a magazine company, an institute, the WPA and many others until it finally became a club. Some of the paranormal activity at the club includes ball rolling on their own on the pool table, sounds of heavy box movements in the storage room even if it is locked and empty. The doors sometimes close on their own and fail to open, the sound of rattling keys and so much more.

The tonic room

  1. The tonic room

The Tonic Room in Lincoln Park has had a series of paranormal events since the 1920s. It once hosted a brothel and a pub on the upstairs. On opening the establishment, an Egyptian iconography was found to be painted on the basement floor and a pentagram on the floor of the basement. The place was thought to be a meeting for the Golden Dawn, the American Chapter. People report apparitions on both the main bar and the basements.

Drake Hotel

  1. Drake Hotel

Drake Hotel was opened in the 1920s. Its grand opening night was both tragic and beautiful. Being one of the most magnificent hotels in Chicago, it had all the glamor on opening. However, the legend has it that a man and his fiancé attended the opening. The fiancé had a red silk gown. In the course of the night, the man stepped outside and stayed for too long. His lady went out to look for him only to find him having a romantic encounter with another lady. This made the fiancé mad that she went to the roof and jumped to her death. Now, guests report seeing her ghost at the Palm Court, the roof and on the top floor.

  1. Holy Family Church

It is funny that a church makes on the list of Chicago top 10 most haunted places. The church was built in 1859 and was one of the only buildings to survive the Chicago fire. It is said that the altar stands above a stream that flows under the church that is considered sacred by Native Americans. People have reported seeing figures in and around the church although the church was closed to the public.

The Steak Joynt

  1. The Steak Joynt

Before the building housed the Mexican restaurant called Adobo Grill, it hosted Steak Joynt, one of the Chicago top 10 most haunted places. One of the Chicago mediums even held séances in the upstairs dining rooms. Waiters reported seeing shadows move across the room and felt being touched by unseen hands. There was also strange howling sounds, phantom footsteps, flickering lights and floral scents among other occurrences.

  1. Oriental Theatre

This theater went by several names such as Ford, Oriental, and Iroquois. At its grand opening in 1903, a fire swept the building killing 572 people and 30 later due to injuries. 125 more bodies we collected thought to be people who leaped to their deaths. Despite being a quiet area, people who come near it or live near the building experience uneasiness and hear unexplained sounds from the area.

Clark Bridge

  1. Clark Bridge

At the Clarks Bridge, a ferry carrying more than 2,500 passengers rolled on its side killing more than 800 people. The bridge remains as of today. However, people that visit the site report seeing bodies floating on Chicago River for a time and then sink. There is also an eerie feeling that comes from looking the river.

 

Chicago Water Tower

  1. Chicago Water Tower

The Chicago Water Tower was one of the few buildings that survived the Chicago fire of 1871. The person manning the tower hung himself when fires came too close. His ghost is said to be seen on the windows of the tower. This place closes the list of Chicago top 10 most haunted places.
